The verdict ends a long-running legal dispute over allegations that the marriage took place before a previous divorce had been legally completed.
DHAKA, Bangladesh | June 10, 2026
A court in Bangladesh on Wednesday acquitted former national cricket player Nasir Hossain and his wife, Tamima Sultana Tammi, in a case that alleged they married while Tammi was still legally married to another man.
The verdict was delivered by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Joshita Islam in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Lawyers representing both the complainant and the defendants confirmed the court’s decision.
Nasir and Tammi appeared before the court on Wednesday for the announcement of the verdict.
A Case That Drew Public Attention
The case was filed in February 2021 by Rakib Hasan, who alleged that Tammi married Nasir while she was still in a marital relationship with him.
According to the complaint, Tammi had not legally completed her divorce before marrying Nasir. The allegation attracted significant public attention because Nasir was a member of Bangladesh’s national cricket team and one of the country’s best-known sports figures.
Nasir and Tammi were married on February 14, 2021, at a ceremony held in the Uttara area of Dhaka. Ten days later, on February 24, Rakib filed the case.
Court Finds Allegations Unproven
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court set June 10 as the date for delivering its judgment.
Defense lawyer Azizur Rahman said the court acquitted both Nasir and Tammi because the allegations were not proven. He said the verdict leaves no basis for claims that the couple’s marriage was illegal and added that the defense was satisfied with the ruling.
The complainant’s lawyer, Ishrat Hasan, expressed disagreement with the verdict and said they did not receive justice. She said the complainant’s side plans to appeal the decision.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Bangladesh’s Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), a specialized law enforcement agency responsible for investigating complex criminal cases, investigated the matter and submitted a charge sheet against Nasir and Tammi on September 30, 2021.
On February 7, 2022, a court formally framed charges against the couple, allowing the trial to proceed.
The case remained before the courts for several years before Wednesday’s verdict brought the trial to a close.
Legal and Public Significance
The case received widespread media coverage because of Nasir’s status as a former Bangladesh national cricket player and the public interest surrounding his marriage.
The court’s decision means that both Nasir and Tammi have been cleared of the allegations at the trial court level. However, the legal dispute may continue if the complainant follows through with an appeal.
